Where on Earth is Tuvalu?  The Home of the Trendy Dot TV Domain

It seems the top performer in domain names this year is Dot TV.  With the rush to video as the next generation on the internet, from the largest major corporation to the individual personal website, everyone wants to have a dot tv extension. You’ll have noticed that more and more ads on television for major brands include a web address with this domain. Many companies have augmented their dot com, dot co uk domain names with a second one from .tv.  This is not confined to English language domain names, with “tv” having universal meaning, words in all languages are queuing up to grab a tv identification.

Travel websites are among the most popular on the internet and they too have joined the sprint to get the best dot tv names. With video being just right for that industry the proliferation of dot tv travel sites is in vogue – such as TravelGuide.TV.

The boom in dot tv domains started me thinking just where does dot tv come from.  I’d heard of Tuvalu but decided to do some research to find out more.  It seems Tuvalu is the name of a group of nine islands, eight of which are inhabited. The islands are in the Pacific and are some of the most remote in the world with Fiji being two and a half hours flying time away – some 1000 kilometers away.   Previously they were part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands but voted to become a separate nation in 1978 and changed their name to Tuvalu.  They are still part of the British Commonwealth and celebrate their Independence Day on 1st October.

The population of the islands is about 12,000 and the land mass, though dispersed over a very wide area is tiny, and it is one of the smallest nations in the world.  The main industry is sea-related with fishing a key sector.  The Tuvaluans also benefit from the success of the dot tv domain names through a deal with Verisign. Some query how beneficial this has been to Tuvalu – the deal includes an annual payment and a percentage of the profit but there is likely to be further controversy when the present deal runs out.  Tourism has great potential given the beauty of the islands but there are concerns about the effect on the environment and care is taken to protect it.  To date TravelGuide.TV covers 25 cities but not Tuvalu so to lean about the islands’ tourist offerings visit the official tourist at Timeless Tuvalu
